Review: BROKEN HOURS by Jacqueline Baker

I have been extraordinarily blessed in the last few years by discovering several "perfect" books. BROKEN HOURS: A NOVEL OF H. P. LOVECRAFT is one. I don't even feel capable of doing this novel justice in my review. BROKEN HOURS should be an award winner, multiple times.

Mike Davis at LOVECRAFT EZINE highly recommended BROKEN HOURS, and I was impelled to pre-order it (even though mire expensive than I usually buy) and it is worth every single penny. I read it in just a few hours and want to read it again, right away.

If you love the Lovecraftian Mythos; if you enjoy fictional biographies of authors; if you want to be stunned by enormously graceful writing; if you are drawn to depth psychology and abnormal psychology, BROKEN HOURS is your book.

Harboring a Cryptid

By Hunter Shea

When I was asked to write about which elusive cryptid I’d like to discover, my knee jerk reaction was to say Bigfoot. I could live a Harry and the Henderson’s life of hilarity and misadventures. Maybe John Lithgow would come to visit every now and then and I could ask him about what it was like on the set of Garp (one strange but wonderful movie).

But that would be too easy. So I flipped through the cryptid card catalog in my brain. They look kind of like those safari cards we used to ask our parents for as kids back in the 70s and 80s, except they’re not real and Time-Life can’t make a dime off them.

And then I remembered the Pukwudgie. First, I just love the name! Say it 5 times fast.

Pukwudgie.

Pukwudgie.

Pukwudgie.

Pukwudgie.

Pukwudgie.

It’s like Beetlejuice, only without the ensuing haunting. What is a Pukwudgie, you might ask? Well, according to Wampanoag Indian legend, a Pukwudgie is a wee, humanishcreature that stands just under 3 feet tall with elongated noses and ears. They’re very much like a Native American troll. They’ve been known to be quite the bastards, using magic to disappear and confuse people, even luring them to their deaths by leading them off cliffs.

Pukwudgies inhabited the forests of Massachusetts, near the infamous Bridgewater Triangle. Starting out as benign beings, jealousy over favorable treatment of Indian tribes set them on a path of destruction. Stories abound about their harassing the Wampanoag, burning their villages, kidnapping and murdering children and scaring the bejeesus out of them.

All that aside, there’s something about them that tickles me and makes me want to keep one in my house. How cool would it be to introduce visitors to your pal, the Pukwudgie? Then you just have to hope he doesn’t shoot an arrow through their chests.

You don’t hear much about them, which is why I hold them so close to my heart. I always root for the underdog, even the mean, ugly ones. They’re a whole lot of bad-ass-ness in a tiny package. That gives them my seal of approval.

To the Bridgewater Triangle I go!

Killing gets easier…with practice.

Peter Blades is, in every sense of the word, an ordinary man. Hard worker, father, husband, a man content with small-town life. Except for one small fact—he’s slowly being turned into a ruthless killer.

Compelled by mysterious texts to murder, he’s provided a fiery red Mustang and an ancient sword to carry out an ever-growing hit list. His jerkoff boss is victim number one. You always remember your first.

By the time his sword sings through the air to dispatch a would-be school shooter, taking lives is as easy as breathing. And if the world is going to hell around him, all the better. No one wants to burn alone.

Biography

Hunter Shea is the product of a childhood weaned on The Night Stalker, The Twilight Zone and In Search Of. He doesn’t just write about the paranormal – he actively seeks out the things that scare the hell out of people and experiences them for himself.

Publishers Weekly named The Montauk Monster one of the best reads of the summer in 2014, and his follow up novel,Hell Hole, was named best horror novel of the year on several prestigious horror sites. Cemetery Dance had this to say about his apocalyptic thriller, Tortures of the Damned – “A terrifying read that left me wanting more. I absolutely devoured this book!”

Hunter is an amateur cryptozoologist, having written wild, fictional tales about Bigfoot, The Montauk Monster, The Dover Demon and many new creatures to come. Copies of his books, The Montauk Monster and The Dover Demon, are currently on display in the InternationalCryptozoology Museum in Portland, ME.

He wrote his first novel with the express desire to work only with editor Don D’Auria at Dorchester (Leisure Horror). He submitted his novel to Don and only Don, unagented, placed on the slush pile. He is proof that dedicated writers can be rescued from no man’s land. He now works with Don, along with several other agents and publishers, having published over ten books in just four years.

Hunter is proud to be be one half of the Monster Men video podcast, along with his partner in crime, Jack Campisi. It is one of the most watched horror video podcasts in the world. Monster Men is a light-hearted approach to dark subjects. Hunter and Jack explore real life hauntings, monsters, movies, books and everything under the horror sun. They often interview authors, crytid and ghost hunters, directors and anyone else living in the horror lane.

Living with his wonderful family and two cats, he’s happy to be close enough to New York City to get Gray’s Papaya hot dogs when the craving hits. His daughters have also gotten the horror bug, assisting him with research, story ideas and illustrations that can be seen in magazines such as Dark Dossier.

Praise for Hunter Shea

“This wholly enthralling hulk of a summer beach read is redolent of sunscreen and nostalgia, recalling mass market horror tales of yore by John Saul, Dean Koontz, and Peter Benchley.” — Publishers Weekly — Voted one of the best reads of summer, on The Montauk Monster

“Bloody good read!  This guy knows his monsters!”- Eric S Brown, author of Bigfoot War and Boggy Creek: The Legend is True, on Swamp Monster Massacre

“Hunter Shea is a great writer, highly entertaining, and definitely in the upper echelon in the current horror scene. Many other writers mention either loving his work and/or having the man influence their own, and for just cause. His writing suits anyone with a taste for the dark and terrifying!” –Zakk at The Eyes of Madness/The Mouth of Madness Podcast

Review: I KILL IN PEACE by Hunter Shea

A new direction for Mr. Shea, and a welcome one, I KILL IN PEACE is the story of one ordinary man, Peter Blades, a husband and father, marketing director of a multinational corporation--a man who desires to do his job, and love his family. So simple--instead, Peter Blades finds his life turned inside out and upside down, as he becomes larger-than-life when he is overtaken by Something Other. A stunning and unexpected denouement and conclusion ensure this story will linger in the mind.

Ezekiel Boone rocks!!! If you prefer your thrillers roller-coaster-paced, heart-in-mouth, rendering you breathless from first page to last, THE HATCHING is your novel!! I was blown away--the writing is so good, and I befriended the characters. I just have to deliver one caution: if severe arachnophobia is your.bete noir, you will find THE HATCHING very, very INTENSE.

Review: A MIXED BAG OF BLOOD by David Bernstein

Author David Bernstein possesses an imagination which leaves me awestruck. His newest short story collection, A MIXED BAG OF BLOOD, crosses the range. It's not thematic, and much is unexpected ["how does he imagine these things??] but it's unremittingly excellent writing, and completely horrifying. Something for everyone here, and a good introduction to this fine author.

Third in the SINGAPOREAN MYSTERY series, this mystery requires Aunty Rosie Lee, proprietor of a well-patronized Singapore restaurant, to solve two mysteries that may involve her new business partner. A British expatriate accused three years earlier of killing an adopted dog, has returned to Singapore and is herself murdered, reigniting the uproar she had incited three years ago. Aunty Lee may be an outstanding cook and restaurateur, but she is also a clever sleuth.

BLINDNESS by Jose Saramago

From Goodreads:

José de Sousa Saramago (pronounced [ʒuˈzɛ sɐɾɐˈmagu]) was a Nobel-laureate Portuguese novelist, playwright and journalist. He was a member of the Portuguese Communist Party.
His works, some of which can be seen as allegories, commonly present subversive perspectives on historic events, emphasizing the human factor rather than the officially sanctioned story. Saramago was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1998. He founded the National Front for the Defense of Culture (Lisbon, 1992) with among others Freitas-Magalhaes. He lived on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain, where he died in June 2010.

A foundation with his name was established in 2007; its main aims are cultural promotion, particularly of Portuguese literature and authors. The José Saramago Foundation is currently based in Casa dos Bicos, a Portuguese landmark building in Lisbon. Saramago's house in Lanzarote is also open to the public.

José Saramago, together with his wife Pilar, were the subject of the award-winning documentary José e Pilar, providing us with a glimpse into their love story and life, as he was writing his A Viagem do Elefante.

WOMAN IN WHITE by Kristin Dearborn_Tour

Woman in White by Kristin Dearborn
NOVELLA
Available: Feb 4, 2016
Publisher: DarkFuse
Format: eBook ($2.99)
Synopsis
Rocky Rhodes, Maine.

As a fierce snowstorm descends upon the sleepy little town, a Good Samaritan stops to help a catatonic woman sitting in the middle of the icy road, and is never seen or heard from again. When the police find his car, it is splattered in more blood than the human body can hold.

While the storm rages on, the wave of disappearances continue, the victims sharing only one commonality: they are all male. Now it's up to three young women to figure out who or what is responsible: a forensic chemist, a waitress struggling with an abusive boyfriend, and a gamer coping with the loss of her lover.

Their search will lead them on a journey filled with unspeakable horrors that are all connected to a mysterious Woman in White.

Review: WOMAN IN WHITE by Kristin Dearborn

A superb and very scary horror tale, WOMAN IN WHITE blends terror, science fiction, domestic violence, and small-town madness in a story that kept me riveted and on seat' s edge. In the quiet little community of Rocky Rhodes, Maine, in the dense woods, change has arrived. Citizens are disappearing, but only men. Forensic analysis of vast quantities of blood reveal it is human, but altered and degraded--unidentifiable. And the truth is scarier than you could ever imagine...

Praise

"Horror born straight from a nor'easter, Dearborn's Woman in White is a great read for a winter night—with a monster I'll never forget." —Christopher Irvin, author of Federales and Burn Cards

"Kristin Dearborn's Woman in White is a rip-roaring monster tale with sharp-eyed characterization and something to say about the power dynamics between men and woman. Thought-provoking and entertaining as hell!" —Tim Waggoner, author of Eat the Night

"Great stuff! Suspenseful, quickly paced, unpredictable and wonderfully evil tale. Kristin Dearborn’s best yet!” —Jeff Strand, author of Pressure

Biography

If it screams, squelches, or bleeds, Kristin Dearborn has probably written about it. She’s written books such as Sacrifice Island (DarkFuse), Trinity (DarkFuse), and had fiction published in several magazines and anthologies. Stolen Away was recently a limited edition offered from Thunderstorm Books, which sold out. She revels in comments like "But you look so normal...how do you come up with that stuff?" A life-long New Englander, she aspires to the footsteps of the local masters, Messrs. King and Lovecraft. When not writing or rotting her brain with cheesy horror flicks (preferably creature features!), she can be found scaling rock cliffs or zipping around Vermont on a motorcycle, or gallivanting around the globe. Review: PROUD PARENTS by Kristopher Rufty

Whenever I read a novel containing a child with a terminal illness, I think, "this must be a parent's worst nightmare." Then I read about a stranger abduction: "no, this is the worst!" While both of these are terrifying and all too prevalent, another nightmare exists: what if your child is born "deformed"?

The child in PROUD PARENTS, through no fault of his own, is not completely human--hardly at all, in fact. His parents still love him immensely--they've moved cross country to protect him and hide his secret. See, Gabe possesses unusual appetites. And he'll go to extraordinary lengths to protect himself.

Review: LOST GIRLS by Robert Kolker

LOST GIRLS is the single most engrossing true crime account I have read. Author Robert Kolker, who specifically avoids fictionalizing any portion of his account, introduces readers to a much-maligned, often misguided, sometimes greedy but other times simply clawing at survival, societal construct: sex workers, specifically prostitution conducted via the Internet. Long Island, Eastern Connecticut, and upstate New York, as well as New York City, are the locales for this narrative of unrelenting woe: the hard lives and untimely deaths of several young women, whose ultimate consequence was encountering the wrong customer.

True justice would include discovery of this serial killer, and subsequent trial and conviction. For now, the only closure for the women's families is the discovery of their bodies, and the knowledge that their loved ones are no longer missing, but deceased.

A superbly engrossing and absorbing mystery operating on multiple levels, THE THREE DEATHS OF MAGDALENE LAYTON is a marvel penned by an accomplished author. I don't even know where to begin to summarize. Suffice it to say, the reader's heartstrings will be repeatedly wrenched, and there will be in turns surprise, shock, and grief. Many characters suffer, and yes, some few are constructed of the stuff of monsters. Author Hayton, a New Zealand native, frequently references factual local crimes [which I looked up], adding to the fictional story both local color and human interest. Rest assured, this is an unforgettable novel.

We Are The Hanged Man We Are The Hanged Man by Douglas Lindsay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Review: WE ARE THE HANGED MAN by Douglas Lindsay

A superbly plotted and deeply characterized mystery, WE ARE THE HANGED MAN is the first in a new series by Douglas Lindsay, a prolific and excellent author. Its protagonist, Detective Chief Inspector Robert Jericho, of Somerset and Avon Police, I venture to say, is in a class by himself. Nine years as a virtually unneeded DCI in the tiny low-crime community of Wells, Jericho had formerly been a hot-shot detective with London's Metropolitan Police. After the inexplicable and unsolved disappearance of his wife Amanda, he fell into a black hole of depression and transferred to Wells.

Jericho despises shallow "popular" culture and reality television shenanigans, yet he is tapped for consultant-judge on a new pilot called "Britain's Got Justice," and his taciturn--and high integrity--result in his being targeted: by a covert organization, by his own Superintendent, by a sociopathic killer he arrested 30 years earlier.

If you enjoy British crime fiction, or special protagonists, or just superb writing, do not miss WE ARE THE HANGED MAN or the continuing series.
